Niederwihl

Geography:
The 520 inhabitants of the village of Niederwihl live in the valley of the Alb river. Niederwihl was incorporated into the district of Goerwihl on 1 January 1975.

History:
The village was founded in the second period of colonization of the Hotzenwald area, with its neighboring village Oberwihl. The parish and dean's office were first mentioned in documents in 1275, named Wile. The name nidern Wile first appears in 1328.
It is notable that there was a close connection to the monastery of St. Blasien, which owned two farms in the village of Niederwihl and held the jurisdiction. The monastery had the patronage on the village church called St. Gregor.
By 1432 the vicarage of Niederwihl no longer had its own priest. Church services were held by priest and curators from Todtmoos, on order of the monastery St. Blasien.
In 1697, the village once again had its own vicarage and priest. Today, the villages of Oberwihl and Russwihl religiously belong to Niederwihl In the middle ages, a village called Schecechenwihl existed between Niederwihl and Oberwihl. This village was last mentioned in documents in 1383.
Built since 1946: a water reservoir, school, laundry, cold storage, town hall and sports facilities.
